How can I (as a woman) negotiate for what I want?

There are many ways to learn to negotiate for what you want, whether you are a man or a woman. By defining your vision, you should know what you want: A new salary, new roles and responsibilities, an advanced degree, or a job transfer. Almost everything in a conversation turns into a negotiation and the outcome of the negotiation/conversation should help both parties. The better your skills, the better the outcome – for both of you.

Becoming a good negotiator is about:

1. Learning the best way to negotiate through education, your team members, watching others, and just through your own experience as to what has worked and what hasn't work.

2. Gaining confidence. You may want to practice what you are going to say with your mentor, prepare for possible questions, and know how to wrap up the conversation depending on which way decision goes.

3. Be professional, look professional and act professional. Be strong and ask for what you want.
