KD Hosts Training Academy

More than 1,600 Kappa Deltas will convene in Atlanta, Feb. 10-12, for the sorority’s inaugural National Collegiate Training Academy. Every collegiate chapter will send 10 executive chapter officers and an advisor to “The Academy” where each participant will follow a specific meeting track for her office. National Leadership Team members and professionals in various fields will lead attendees to identify their strengths, learn to work as a team, implement the programs and initiatives of the sorority, and successfully carry out their duties in the chapter.

“The skills our members will learn at The Academy and use in the chapter are ones that will serve them well throughout life,” said National President Beth Langford. “We are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for our collegiate leaders to be their best, for stronger members make for an even stronger Kappa Delta.”

Membership Circles Honor Kappa Delta Commitment

Each year Kappa Delta welcomes members into the Nautilus, White Rose, Emerald and Diamond Circles for 25, 50, 60 and 75 years of membership, respectively. These circles acknowledge that membership in Kappa Delta is a journey that begins in college and continues for a lifetime.

Kappa Deltas who are celebrating one of these milestone anniversaries and have current addresses on file with National Headquarters will receive a congratulatory letter and a form to complete and return to receive a complimentary printed certificate. Members also have the opportunity to purchase jewelry commemorating their specific circle membership.

For more information or to update your address, contact Kelly Pearson at alumnaeservices@kappadelta.org or 800.536.1897, Ext. 219.

Gamma Upsilons Share their KD Pride

Three Gamma Upsilon-Texas A&M/Commerce alumnae and current members of the chapter appear in a recent issue of the university’s magazine, The Pride. Sarah Sharp Allen and Emily Maxwell Herron are featured in stories looking at the “then and now” of campus life. Tracey Wolfe, who serves as secretary/treasurer for the Kappa Delta Foundation board of directors, is pictured with chapter members next to a bronze lion that she donated to the school on behalf of the KD chapter.

The photo caption in Texas A&M/Commerce magazine reads: “The Kappa Delta Sorority dedicated a bronze lion statue to the university Oct. 22 as a part of the 2011 Homecoming festivities. Located at the northeast corner of the Rayburn Student Center, the statue was made possible by the efforts of Tracey Wolfe (B.S. 1973, M.S. 1976). Photo by: Jason Flowers.”

Sarah Sharp Allen, who was a charter member and holds the chapter’s badge No. 4, provides a glimpse of campus life in the early 1960s and shares how Kappa Delta has remained an important part of her life as a member of the Newport Harbor, Calif., alumnae chapter. At Texas A&M/Commerce, Sarah was named the 1960 Woman of the Year, and in 1996, she was named Southern California’s Kappa Delta Alumna of the Year in recognition of her involvement and volunteer efforts.

The "now" KD featured in The Pride magazine is Emily Maxwell Herron, a 1999 initiate of Gamma Upsilon who served her chapter as treasurer and president. On campus, she was a member of the student government election board, Alpha Chi honor society, Greek Council and the Homecoming committee. Emily graduated from the University of Tulsa School of Law and is a member of the district attorney’s office in her hometown of Idabel, Okla.

The alumni magazine credits Kappa Delta for playing an important role in the lives of both women, saying that it was the bond of KD sisterhood that helped Sarah adjust to a new life in California. Sarah says, “Although I only had a year as a collegiate Kappa Delta, I’ve had 52 years to enjoy sisterhood and philanthropy as an alumna.”

Author Ashley Johnson tells readers, “For Emily, Greek life was more than a campus activity; it was the training ground for her future providing her with valuable leadership and public speaking skills she would one day use in the courtroom. It also gave her a love for philanthropic activities and contributed to her desire to help others in the community. The training she received in the classroom complemented the abilities she gained as a Kappa Delta by teaching her to set goals and strive hard to achieve them.”

KD Foundation Supports Traveling Consultant Program

The Kappa Delta Foundation announced that it will support Kappa Delta's traveling consultant program with a $163,000 grant for the 2012-2013 travel year. The grant will fund increased opportunities for leadership training for Kappa Delta collegiate members across the country.

"One of the primary roles of the Kappa Delta consultants is to educate our members to be leaders in the chapter, on campus and in the larger world during college and after they graduate," said Foundation Chairman Lillian Scott Leslie. "Providing educational and leadership opportunities has always been central to the foundation's mission, and we're proud to support our members by investing in the consultant program."

Formerly known as chapter development consultants, leadership development consultants will offer thorough and consistent leadership and chapter management training to Kappa Delta collegiate members and their alumnae advisors. The additional funding from the Kappa Delta Foundation will enable the sorority to hire 11 consultants, an increase from seven in 2011-2012, to provide the necessary support and training to Kappa Delta's 143 collegiate chapters.

"We truly appreciate the foundation's support, which is allowing the consultant program to grow alongside our organization," said National President Beth Langford.

Kappa Delta's 2012-2013 leadership development consultants will be hired in February and receive two weeks of training in June at Kappa Delta National Headquarters in Memphis, Tenn.

National Panhellenic Conference Message

February is the Month of the Scholar

The National Panhellenic Conference established the Month of the Scholar to highlight the importance of scholarship and academics for all 26 member groups. Now in its 11th year, the event is held in February and is a great time for collegiate chapters, college Panhellenic associations and alumnae chapters to acknowledge the importance of learning.

Here are some suggestions of how alumnae can participate in the Month of the Scholar:

  • Host a book club to encourage continuing education.
  • Sponsor a students’ night out for members currently enrolled in graduate programs.
  • Support local collegians by creating midterm and/or finals goodie bags. Make the plans during the Month of the Scholar and then distribute them at the appropriate time.
  • Sponsor a program on building a successful career. Include opportunities for members to connect through a career-mentorship program.
However you celebrate, remember the Panhellenic Creed, “We as undergraduate members of women’s fraternities stand for good scholarship …” and “We, as fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character …”

Share Your Skills with Kappa Delta

Have you considered volunteering your time to serve as a mentor, role model or advisor? Kappa Delta is currently recruiting across the country for alumnae to serve on chapter advisory boards and house corporations.

Chapter advisors and house corporation members are alumnae who take the time to stay involved and care about the success of the chapter and the development of its individual members. They come from different backgrounds and professions, but they all share the fond memories of their college years in a Kappa Delta chapter and want to ensure the same opportunity is provided for today's collegians. The time commitment that volunteers make to Kappa Delta is up to them and depends on the role they take on with a chapter or house corporation. Each group will work individually with new volunteers on time commitment and expectations depending on each specific position.

If you are interested in serving on a CAB, please visit kappadelta.org/volunteer to complete the application. Indicate on your application the chapters you are interested in helping and return your application to cabrecruitment@kappadelta.org. If you are not located near a collegiate chapter but are interested in helping, please let us know as we may have opportunities to advise chapters remotely. Specific questions can be directed to cabrecruitment@kappadelta.org. Please note: the cabrecruitment@kappadelta.org email should only be used for CAB applications and CAB recruitment. All other CAB matters should continue to be sent to Jenn Cronin at cab@kappadelta.org.

If you are interested in serving on a house corporation, email Cindy Mize at chapterhousing@kappadelta.org.

Calling all KD Cooks

The Indianapolis Evening alumnae chapter is calling all KD cooks to claim bragging rights for the best recipes in the sorority. The Indy group is hosting a recipe competition and compiling a hardcover cookbook that will serve as a fundraiser for Shamrock. Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to Prevent Child Abuse America, with 80 percent benefiting The Julian Center, a shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.

Submitted recipes will be prepared and judged by the organization Cooking for Families. A professional photographer will take photos of the winning entries in each category, and those photos will be the dividers for each category in the cookbook. The top recipe out of all eight categories will be the front cover of the cookbook.

This competition is open to any Kappa Delta, and members may submit as many recipes as they wish in any or all of the categories. Click here to download the recipe submission form or contact Beth Herick Huston, AC president, at kdomegazi1087@gmail.com or 317.605.0144. Members are asked to send their recipe forms and photos of themselves by Jan. 31 to Beth at the email address above or 4828 Birmingham Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46235.

KDs may also contact Beth regarding advertising space and/or pre-ordering cookbooks at $10 each.

Great Memories

Early Members Get Down to Business

By Shirley Gee, Kappa delta Archives Coordinator

The first convention of what was then known as Kappa Delta Fraternity was held Dec. 29 and 30, 1903, at the Jefferson Hotel, Richmond, Va. There were five members present, and as many or more important decisions to be made. During this meeting, they adopted the official seal, an open equilateral triangle of gold superimposed upon a dagger with straight lines connecting the center of the base of the triangle with the center of each side, forming the Greek letters Kappa Delta.

The group also decided that if Kappa Delta were to be a national organization, then it should publish a quarterly magazine. Advertisements and subscriptions would take care of most of the expense of the publication. Each college chapter was accessed $15 annually to be paid to the “Grand Chapter.”

The Convention of 1913 voted that each member serving on the National Council should have a special piece of jewelry to signify her work. In 1916, it was decided that each National Council member qualified to wear a specially designed ring. Upon the death of a council member the ring is to be buried with the deceased or returned to the sorority.

Pearls, diamonds and emeralds were the jewels adopted by the 1917 Convention in Birmingham, Ala. Of course, these gems were chosen based on the colors olive green and white that were designated by the founders. Early members also selected the white rose, which stands for purity and innocence, as the sorority’s official flower.

The first Chapter Officers’ Handbook was prepared by Sarah Blue in 1921, and the Kappa Delta Pledge Manual, now known as the Norman Shield, was first compiled in 1935 by Pauline Reynolds.
