Outside activities should provide more than a line-item on your resume. Many companies call it our social responsibility. I learned early in my career that Arthur Andersen & Co. felt it was our responsibility to make our communities better for our having lived there. So I began to invest time outside work in community activities, like the United Way and the Girl Scouts.
In addition to looking good on a resume, having outside activities will let you meet a group of people [networking opportunities] who have a passion for the work being done by the activity. Together you all will make a difference for the organization. Lastly, you will begin to gain business knowledge and leadership skills you can take back to your company.
