With your vision in mind, it is now important to have a team of advisors to help you make it happen. Your team should include faculty, friends, role models, alumni, experts in your field, mentors and advocates. Mentors are absolutely critical and can provide different types of assistance. A good mentor should be:
1. Someone you can confide in. A good mentor listens when you want to talk about something that just happened to you. It is essential that you get problem situations out of your system [like the men do] so you don’t continue to rehash the situation, over and over again. This person may be someone who will just listen and let you talk (an active listener) or it may be someone from whom you would like some advice and counsel (a problem solver).
2. A career counselor. A good mentor will help you plot your career path, prepare for annual reviews, and provide an outsiders' viewpoint of career opportunities and feedback you receive from others.
